  • Constructor class questions

I'm looking to get back into rallycross after about a 6 year absence. I see this new constructor class and I'm getting excited but, as I read the rules in it I have some questions.

    1. If I make a tube chassis sand rail like vehicle how can it conform to having a SS/IT roll cage? This standard of roll cage assumes its in a production vehicle. It has specifications for how to tie in the cage to the existing body. So how could a full tube chassis meet that specification? There is no body to tie into.

    2. Would a roll cage that met the standards for an scca open wheel vehicle like a formula ford or formula mazda fall into the section F.5 "or the current requirements of another sanctioning body approved by the SCCA is required." I would think the safety threshold would be much higher in wheel to wheel road racing than rallycross.

    Thanks

Welcome back to RallyCross! The RallyCross Board intends for the Constructors class rules to be relatively unrestricted subject to key safety requirements. With regard to building a tube chassis, full tube frame construction is allowed. The cage would need to meet or exceed the SS/IT cage requirements (main hoop, front hoop, up to 8 attachment points, approved tubing size/type, proper welding, designed to prevent engine intrusion, etc.). If you use square or round tubing for the main horizontal chassis beams, the cage would be welded to the beams (instead of using plates to mount on a unibody chassis). The cage could be built to the specifications of a "higher" standard (another SCCA road racing class or other approved sanctioning body) but not formula car specifications unless they require a front hoop. When you complete the plans for your chassis/cage, be sure to forward them to the Rules Committee or post them on this forum for feedback before you start the build to make sure the design is good to go. Looking forward to watching your build as it progresses.

Thanks for the response, I wish the rules stated more clearly what you have outlined.
I would like some clearer understanding or rationale behind why a formula car cage specification would not be safe or is not desired?
      thanks

Formula car cage specs would likely be okay with the addition of a front hoop and a roof skin connecting the front and main hoop. When you finalize your cage design, the Rules Committee is happy to review the design and give you feedback to help make sure the cage is class compliant.
